The Story of PWS

An epidemic that’s stealing your life

There’s an epidemic that’s sweeping through society. All around us we see more and more overweight people. Every day we hear news reports telling us how we or our children are becoming more obese, how our societies health is suffering more weight related health issues.

Yet everywhere we turn we are been tempted to take in unnecessary energy, fast food, junk food, low fat food or food with health claims, it doesn’t matter it’s all excess energy that we don’t need. Then we are encouraged to be sedentary, watching TV, taking the elevator and making every journey by car. Before we know it we are overweight, lethargic, lacking energy and not happy with how we look or how we feel. Worst of all this is the example we are setting for our children to follow. We believe you can enjoy the freedom of becoming slimmer and healthier and controlling you weight starting now! You can choose to look great, feel great and have more energy in your life.

We know how it is. You’ve tried all the diets and you know you can lose weight, you’ve done it before, but it always seems to creep back on. Yet deep down you feel you are meant to be slimmer, that there must be another way.

We believe you deserve more.

Your friends and family might tell you it’s not possible, they could be trying to protect you from the disappointment of failing again. They’ll say it’s in your genes, you’re big boned or it’s your metabolism, but being overweight doesn’t feel natural to you. As part of the PWS community you’ll break free of these limiting beliefs, you’ll begin control your weight not be controlled by your weight.

You can have the body and lifestyle of your dreams

The confidence you get from losing weight, looking and feeling better and being fitter and healthier will give you energy and the desire to do things you haven’t done for years and may be some things you never thought you would do.

The realisation of a dream

Not long after leaving college Andy begun working in the fitness industry, he soon realised that most clients wanted to lose weight or fat. Easy he thought I know how to do that. He thought it was just a matter of telling everyone and the problem was solved and he could get on with getting them fitter and stronger. But things aren’t that simple. People listened, agreed with what he said but only a few put it in to practice and most of them eventually gave up. Knowing what to do is no good if you don’t do what you know. So what was wrong?

This time he gave his clients more of the facts and his personal time guiding them step by step. Giving encouragement and support whenever needed, telling them every day what to eat and do. This time it worked everyone lost weight and no one dropped out. But the cost of his time was so great he could only work with a small number of people at one time and the cost to the client was high, not a viable business and it was never going to reach the masses.

A book he thought, I’ll write it all down as a book. It ended up being a big course in nicely printed binder, lots of information set out to be easy to follow. Mail order was the idea but that never worked the cost of advertising and marketing to reach a large volume of people was prohibitive. Of the people who did use it a high percentage eventually re-gained weight, so there was still something wrong. The delivery system didn’t work because of cost and speed and the system wasn’t sustainable which it had been with the personal attention.

The light goes on

Finally it became clear what was needed, the book format didn’t work because the information comes in one big chunk. The client is enthusiastic at the beginning and reads it all in one week, but gradually that initial enthusiasm wears off and they are left alone and they don’t want to go back to where they need to be in the book, they’ve already read that bit and they don’t have the motivation go back to it themselves. They know what to do but don’t do it.

Postal delivery didn’t work. It was too slow and had no community or feedback. About Andy

For as long as I can remember I have been interested in weight, body fat and body image. I can remember being about 10 years old and been embarrassed at having what I thought was too much body fat in PE lessons. This disappeared naturally when I became so involved in sport. Then at the age of 14 or 15 I became interested in weight training and body building. This started my interest in nutrition, as anyone who knows a body builder will know they are obsessed with what they eat.

Twice in my adult life I have been overweight; both times it happened when major life events caused my lifestyle to change. Looking back it was so predictable but at the time it took me by surprise. The first time I just did what I knew, counted every calorie and ran and ran and ran and ran. It worked, probably because I am a very determined person and can obsessively stick to something when my mind is made up.

I did realise however that I had lost weight and regained my fitness more by chance than knowing exactly what to do. This lack of control of my own body disturbed me; I needed to know how to look after my own fitness, health and weight. When I was in to body building there were so many conflicting opinions around about what was best practice, the same was true for running, diet and weight loss. I had to find the truth. This is when I enrolled in college. At this point my motivation was totally selfish; I was prepared to study for all that time just to understand and have control of my own health and fitness. To make ends meet I started teaching aerobics, quite unusual for a young lad in the eighties when it was still considered as dance/exercise to music. This led to me getting a job offer to manage a health club where it soon became apparent that teaching others about health and fitness was my calling in life.

Andy’s philosophy on weight control

I’m not a great advocate of many of the diet and weight loss plans that are on offer, whether it is the big name high profile diets, the eating plans from a dietician or programmes designed and delivered by many personal trainers and gym staff. That’s not to say that I think they are all bad, far from it, especially the ones that stay around year after year. If you follow any of them you are likely to lose weight, but in my view they don’t deliver what, over the years the majority of my clients have asked for, and that is:

  1. 1.   To lose weight.
  2. 2.   To lose body fat.
  3. 3.   Improve muscle tone.
  4. 4.   Never put the weight back on.
  5. 5.   Have a good understanding of diet and exercise and know what to do.
  6. 6.   Have the motivation to do what they know.
  7. 7.   Lose the areas of fat that never seem to go, i.e. Love Handles, Saddle Bags, Man Boobs or the Paunch the stubborn bit of fat on the front of the belly.
  8. 8.    Be able to control weight/fat without stressing and thinking about food all the time.

Most of the diets and weight loss plans will deliver at least one of the top three but very few will deliver all eight.

Anyone who is serious about losing weight and having control of their weight in the future first must consider health. Any weight loss plan or diet that does not first address your health is not going to deliver the kind of weight loss that you are happy with and to keep the weight off will be a monumental struggle. My theory on weight loss or more accurately weight control is that there are 6 key questions to consider if you want to have permanent control of your weight and they are:

  1. 1.   Do I have a clearly defined weight loss goal, a vision of what I will look and feel like when I have lost the weight?
  2. 2.   Have I addressed the question of health? (see link above)
  3. 3.   Will I be regularly exercising aerobically?
  4. 4.   Is the diet I am using to lose weight sustainable; is it what I will be eating when I have lost the weight?
  5. 5.   Do I have an active lifestyle?
  6. 6.   Is the exercise I am doing sustainable; can I do it every day if I want or do I need rest days?
  7. 7.   Do I have a support network in place, family, friends, colleagues or a coach to encourage me and keep me on track?
  8. 8.   Am I ready to make a total commitment to my weight loss goal  or “am I fat enough yet to really want to do it”?

I f you can answer yes to all these you will have an excellent opportunity to lose weight and be in control of it for the future.
